TechRadar (UK), 13 November 2017By now, you probably know that the newest version of the Google Play Store for Android is called ‘DogTag’ and is the best version for the iPhone and iPad that the app has ever had.
But what about the other Android phones, the Google Pixel, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ (including the S8+) and the HTC 10?
All of them support the ‘Dogtag’ version, but only the HTC phones are available on the ‘Preliminary’ version.
So, what’s the point of this ‘preliminary version’ of ‘Dogtags’ that is not available on every Android device?
Well, that’s actually a good question.
We’ll explain why.
So let’s say you’re on the fence about which Android phone you should buy, and the only thing you can do is compare the prices.
If the phone you’ve chosen is a Nexus 5X or 6P, for example, then the price is £199 for the phone, which is around £5 more than the ‘possible’ price for ‘DogTags’ on the other devices.
If you are on a Pixel or Pixel XL and want to use the ‘best version’ on Android, the ‘Premium’ version is around $299 for a phone that’s only around £50 more expensive than ‘Dog Tags’.
If you are using an HTC phone, you could easily make a choice of which phone you would like to upgrade from, so long as you have a good enough credit card to cover the full price of the phone.
However, there are a few factors to consider when buying a phone.
Firstly, you need to ensure that the phone is compatible with ‘Dog tags’ before you can even consider buying it.
This is because if you want to make a purchase on the phone which will not work with ‘dogtags’, you will have to pay a $9.99 annual subscription fee.
Secondly, it is a good idea to look at other smartphone companies to see if they offer the ‘Best’ version of ‘dog tags’ for your particular smartphone.
For example, we have already covered the iPhone 7s Plus, but the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, the Pixel, Pixel XL, Galaxy S6 and S6 edge, and more.
Finally, the best way to ensure compatibility is to buy a device which has a full-featured hardware camera app that will work with Dogtags.
That way, if you do not have a camera app installed on your phone, or it’s not installed, you will be able to take good quality photos.
We’ve tried the ‘dogtag’ app on the HTC U11 and the Galaxy A7, the Galaxy Note 5 and the LG V30, the LG G6, and even the OnePlus 5T.
The ‘possibility’ version works on the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, and iPhone XR, but not on the Nexus 5, iPhone 6, iPhone 5S, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, iPhone 9, and Nexus 10.
So, we cannot recommend the ‘purist’ version as the best smartphone for dogtags.
